It can be a tricky task to find a suitable freelance graphic designer for your business. I often hear people complain about the experiences they have had with graphic designers. Some people feel misunderstood or disappointed by the design outcome because their expectations were not met. The relationship between yourself and the graphic designer can become fragile if the getting-to-know-each-other stage is rushed or even ignored. So here are my five tips on choosing the right freelance graphic designer for your next business project.<\/p>\n

TIP 1: Ask to meet them face-to-face<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Never underestimate meeting someone in person. You can learn so much about someone’s personality and business attitude just by observing their body language, the way they talk and the manner in which they respond to your questions. You may only realise these things on a subconscious level, but it will help establish that ‘gut-feeling’ about your potential graphic designer.<\/p>\n

TIP 2: Ask to see their recent portfolio
\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n

A graphic designer is like a colour; some colours suit you and some don’t. All graphic designers distinguish themselves through their own individual creative eye and way of crafting things. Are you looking for someone to closely adhere to your brand guidelines? Could a new design style add freshness to your project? A good graphic designer will let you know whether or not they are the best fit to achieving your goals. If they are not the best fit, then they will usually refer you to a trusted and more suited graphic designer.<\/p>\n

TIP 3: Ask them about their project process

The project process varies from designer to designer; from deposits to communication to presentation styles. You need to judge whether this process suits your business. Do you have a tight deadline? Will you be communicating with the designer or will it be another member of the team? What is the process for design amendments\u2014will changes be free or will you be invoiced separately? These are some of the questions that you need to ask yourself and discuss with your potential graphic designer.<\/p>\n

TIP 4: Ask to see their terms and conditions<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Would you ever sign a business contract without reading the terms and conditions? No? Graphic designers are running their own businesses and so you need to make sure that you are absolutely happy with their processes. An unexpected invoice can ruin your experience of a creative project!<\/p>\n

TIP 5: Ask for creative solutions to your business needs<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Graphic designers are well-trained problem-solvers and with their creative edge, they can think of more abstract solutions to your business needs. Asking for solutions will also give you an indication of how well the graphic designer understands your business and if they are a good match for the project.<\/span><\/p>\n
